Name: Dhaos.
Fandom: Tales of Phantasia.
Gender: Male.
Time Period: Post-game. (dead)
Wing Color: Orange
In-depth Synopse: Dhaos is probably one of the most misunderstood villains ever. He also set a trend for other Tales series baddies, but they just can’t match up to this ol’ Demon Lord. He hails from the land of Derris-Kharlan, and is likely a descendant from the angels we see in Tales of Symphonia. He does, after all, possess some angelic traits. In later versions of the game, his third battle form is a spandex-wearing Seraph. Also, Yggdrasill’s attacks in the PS2 version of Tales of Symphonia were later altered to match Dhaos’. But anyway, in Tales of Phantasia canon, Derris-Kharlan has three major continents. Sedam, Gudra and a continent which, to my knowledge, is unnamed. Sedam and Gudra were caught up in a terrible war, which caused Derris-Kharlan’s Tree of Mana to slowly wither (sound familiar?). Dhaos was the leader of the third continent, which was trying to stay out of the war until it was absolutely necessary. He sent a message to at least one of the two countries, but it was ignored. The war ended when Sedam fired a Mana Cannon (yes, you heard me) at Gudra, decimating pretty much the entire population and the tree. According to Tales of the World Narikiri Dungeon, this was thanks to two people called Meldia and Dios, who were then punished by Norn, the spirit of the Kharlan Tree. The only way for Dhaos to save his world and his people was to go to Aselia and get a Great Seed from the Yggdrasill tree. To get there, he used a form of timetravel. Sadly, many people, including his girlfriend (I forgot her name) died to make this possible.

After arriving on Aselia, he met a girl named Winona, who guided him to the great Yggdrasill tree. However, upon arrival, he noticed that that tree was dying as well, due to magitechnology. Oh, for shame. It was then that Dhaos decided he would prevent this tree’s destruction. He couldn’t heal the tree, so he would do the next best thing. He would destroy those who were killing the tree. He would eradicate all those foolish humans so that the Yggdrasill tree and his people would be saved. This is how the Valhalla war got started.

Now, all this timetravelling is pretty hard to understand. See, the war ends in two different ways, both because Dhaos is defeated. In one timeline, he is defeated by the original four heroes; Edward, Alan, Carol, and Winona. In another timeline, he is defeated by Cless, Mint, Klarth, and Arche. Cless and Mint were sent back in time, by the way, but more on that later. In both timelines, he flees to the future.

Let’s make this even more confusing, shall we? In the first timeline, after he surpassed about 87 years, Dhaos arrives in the mausoleum where he is immediately sealed by some of Edward’s buds with the aid of two pendants. After being released roughly 10 years later by an idiot named Mars, he goes on a bit of a rampage. Looks like someone got up on the wrong side of their coffin. Edward’s descendant Trinicus sends Cless and Mint back in time to find Klarth and Arche. Now, two more alternate timelines are created. The first is where Trinicus and Chester are killed by Dhaos. The second is where Cless, Mint, Klarth and Arche arrive in time to save the two. In this timeline, Dhaos dies, as he is buried underneath a pile of rubble. However, that still leaves us with two living Dhaoses from two alternate timelines.

Now, one of the two Dhaoses (I’m not sure which) arrives in an even further future, where he declares a full-blown war on all mankind. Cless and co, who are now known as the Heroes of Space Time, are approached by an elf from the future called Brambert, or Brambard, or something. It really depends on which version you play. Aaanyway, the elf guy takes them to the future, where they assemble the Eternal Sword after making a pact with Origin. That sword is the only thing that can defeat Dhaos once and for all, as it sorta prevents him from using timetravel again. The gang also meets Suzu Fujibayashi there, who can be gained as a party member. Again, this depends on the version of the game and certain actions you take.

SO. In Dhaos’ castle, the ‘heroes’ face off against Dhaos one last time. Epic battle of epicness and several final forms ensues. As Dhaos finally falls to the ground, defeated, he asks them what their battle was about in the first place. In Dhaos’ mind, he wasn’t doing anything wrong. He was just trying to save his people. By killing Dhaos, Cless and co. had basically doomed Derris-Kharlan. After find out about this, Cless and the gang ask Martel, the spirit of the Kharlan tree, for help. She sends a Great Seed, as well as Dhaos’ body, up to Derris-Kharlan. So, in the end, everyone wins. … Except for Dhaos, who dies.
